Le finestre dentro di me

Poesia pubblicata su Journal of Italian Translation, primavera 2025. Traduzione inglese di Timothy Smith.

Le finestre dentro di me

Quando guardo le case

penso:

ci devono essere finestre

e porte

anche dentro me.

Le sento aprirsi e chiudersi,

talvolta sbattere.

Eppure, quando morirò,

non credo le troveranno:

il mio scheletro

le ha nascoste per bene

e andranno perdute.

O forse un angelo

se ne farà carico

e le porterà in paradiso

per arredarlo,

oppure in un altro mondo,

dove porte e finestre

servono a sognare,

a perdersi dentro le strade

che aprono e chiudono

quasi per magia.

Se qualcuno le vuole,

gliele posso prestare,

ma a una condizione:

non smettere di sognare.

The Windows Within Me

When I see houses

I think to myself:

there must be windows

and doors

within me as well

I hear them opening, closing,

sometimes banging.

And yet, when I die,

I don’t think they’ll find them:

my skeleton

has hidden them for good

and they’ll be lost forever

Or perhaps an angel

will take care of them

carrying them to heaven

to adorn them,

or rather, in another world,

where doors and windows

are employed for dreaming,

for losing oneself in streets

that open and close

as if by magic.

If anyone wants them,

I can lend them out

but on one condition:

that you don’t stop dreaming.
